Inaugural Function
The Odisha State Sub Junior (Under 15) Open & Girls Chess Championships 2025, organized by the Triple ‘C’ Chess Club under the aegis of the All Odisha Chess Association and supported by the Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha, began with great excitement at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Cuttack. This championship aims to nurture the emerging talents of young chess players up to the age of 15. The events were inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Sri Bijaya Kumar Swain, OAS, Additional Secretary, Govt. of Odisha, at 10:30 A.M. Other distinguished guests included Er Debabratta Bhatta, Secretary, All Odisha Chess Association; Shri Swayangsu Satyapragyan, International Master; Shri Shayan Das, Department of Sports & Youth Services; Shri Biswajit Ray, President, Triple C Chess Club; and Sri Biranchi Narayan Sahoo, Secretary, Triple C Chess Club.

[Chief Guest Sri Bijaya Kumar Swain, OAS, Additional Secretary, Govt. of Odisha inaugurated the events by moving the piece on the chess board with Sattwik Swain, Silver medal winner in World Cadet Championship (U08) 2024.]

The Triple ‘C’ Chess Club aims to provide better opportunities for players by offering an enhanced environment, attractive prizes (both cash and trophies) for winners, and free lodging and boarding for out-stationed players. This was the first rated event for the age category in Odisha. The event spanned four days, with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30-second increments from move number one, and featured nine rounds in a Swiss system league.
The prize pool of ₹55,550, along with two 5G mobile phones for the champions and beautifully designed trophies for the top 10 scorers, as well as trophies for the 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 13 age categories, attracted 260 participants (188 in the Open category and 72 in the Girls category) from 18 districts. Among them, 63 were international-rated players in the Open category and 18 in the Girls category. The tournament was a resounding success, setting new benchmarks for chess events in Odisha. The collective efforts of players, organizers, and supporters ensured a smooth and well-organized tournament. With the growing enthusiasm and support from the All Odisha Chess Association and the Department of Sports and Youth Services, these events are poised to grow into major FIDE-rated tournaments in the coming years.
Finally, the tie-break decided the positions of the top 4 players. Master Biswapreet Ray from Cuttack (8th seed) clinched the Championship in the Open category, scoring 7.0 points and receiving ₹5,550/- along with a 5G mobile phone. The 1st seed Lalit Ranjan Sahu and 2nd seed Sattik Swain became the 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up, respectively, with Lalit receiving ₹4,440/- and a trophy, and Sattik receiving ₹3,330/. In the Girls Championship, Jyotika Sahoo of Cuttack (8th seed) remained unbeaten, scoring 7.5 points to clinch the Championship in the Open category, receiving ₹5,550/- and a 5G mobile phone. Shradha Smaranika Nanda (1st seed) scored 7 points to become the 1st Runner-up, receiving ₹4,440/- and a trophy, while Pritisha Mitra (15th seed) bagged ₹3,330/- and a trophy.

Closing Ceremony

The Championship concluded with a Valedictory ceremony-cum-Prize Distribution at 06:00 P.M., featuring a cultural program for all attendees. The Chief Guest was Sri Lalatendu Badu, Ex-BJP President of Cuttack and Social Worker. Other distinguished guests included Sri Ajay Kumar Behera, DSO, Cuttack; Sri Satya Ranjan Pattnaik, President of the All Odisha Chess Association; and Sri Ritesh Rath, Executive Member of AOCA. They graced the occasion on the last day and distributed the prizes. The event received considerable support from the parents and guardians of the young participants.
The Chief Arbiter, Suresh Chandra Sahoo, International Arbiter was efficiently supported by Deputy Chief Arbiter IA Tapas Kumar Mohanty, IA Santosh Kumar Mohapatra, SNA Suraj Kumar Moharana; SNA Satyajit Barick and SNA Chandra Sekhar Panda. All the Senior National Arbiters demonstrated their dedication and hard work, successfully achieving their FA Norm in this championship.
