Inauguration
The Odisha State (U-11) Open & Girls Chess Championships 2025, organized by the Dhenkanal District Chess Association under the aegis of the All Odisha Chess Association and supported by the Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha, began with great excitement at Gopabandhu Town Hall, Dhenkanal. This championship aims to nurture the emerging talents of young chess players up to the age of 11. The events were inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Rtn. Sagarika Mishra, President, Dhenkanal District Rotary Club, at 10:30 A.M. Other distinguished guests included Sri Nabin Chandra Narayan Das, President, Dhenkanal District Chess Association, Er Debabratta Bhatta, Secretary, Dhenkanal District Chess Association; All Odisha Chess Association; Sri Ramani Ranjan Sen, Programme Manager, Reliance Foundation; Sri Kallol Behera, State Head – Odisha Compressed Bio Energy Plants at Reliance Industries Limited, Reliance Foundation, International Arbiter Suresh Chandra Sahoo, Chief Arbiter; Sri Swayangsu Sathyakam, Veteran Chess Player-cum-Coach. The other Dhenkanal District Chess Association members Sri Rajendra Kumar Samal, Sri Susanta Kumar Swain, Sri Ashok Mishra, Sri Susant Das, Mrs. Priyanka Rout were also present. The Inauguration Ceremony was well conducted by Sri Satyanarayan Kar.

The Dhenkanal District Chess Association aims to provide better opportunities for players by offering an enhanced environment, attractive prizes (both cash and trophies) for winners, and free lodging and boarding for out-stationed players. This was the first rated event for the age category Under 11 in Odisha. The event spanned four days, with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30-second increments from move number one and featured nine rounds in a Swiss system league.
The prize pool of ₹20,000, for the champions and beautifully designed trophies for the top 10 scorers, as well as trophies for the 6, 7, 8,and 9 age categories, attracted only 90 participants (65 in the Open category and 25 in the Girls category) from 16 districts. Among them, 24 were International-rated players in the Open category and 04 in the Girls category. The tournament was a resounding success, setting new benchmarks for chess events in Odisha. The collective efforts of players, organizers, and supporters ensured a smooth and well-organized tournament. With the growing enthusiasm and support from the All Odisha Chess Association and the Department of Sports and Youth Services, these events are poised to grow into major FIDE-rated tournaments in the coming years.

The events concluded with a Valedictory ceremony-cum-Prize Distribution at 05:30 P.M. The Chief Guest was Sri Abhiav Sonkar, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Dhenkanal. Other distinguished guests included Sri Debabrata Bhatta, Secretary, All Odisha Chess Association; Sri Biranchi Narayan Pani, Social Worker; Sri Akshay Kumar Mohanty, Working President DDCA; Sri Nabin Chandra Narayan Das, President, DDCA, Sri Raj Narayan Tripathy, Chattered Accountant; Rtn. Sagarika Mishra, Member DDCA; IA Suresh Chandra Sahoo, Chief Arbiter; IA Tapas Kumar Mohanty Dy Chief Arbiter & IA Santosh Kumar Mohapatra. They graced the occasion on the last day and distributed the prizes. The event received considerable support from the parents and guardians of the young participants.
