The global chess stage has a brilliant young talent to watch, and he hails straight from Odisha.

Odisha’s very own chess prodigy, Candidate Master (CM) Sattwik Swain, has added another prestigious feather to his cap. Competing in the Under-10 Open category, Sattwik secured a fantastic bronze medal at the newly revamped FIDE World Cadets Cup.

The high-stakes event took place from June 16 to 27, 2026, at the Hotel Complex Euphoria in the beautiful coastal city of Batumi, Georgia.

The Road to the Podium

The tournament was an intense, grueling 11-round competition that tested the endurance and strategic depth of the world’s best young minds. Based in Bhubaneswar, Sattwik showed incredible composure to finish third overall.

Here is how his impressive scorecard wrapped up:

  • Total Points: 8.5 out of 11
  • Match Record: 7 wins, 3 draws, and just 1 narrow loss

Sattwik shared the podium with gold medalist Rizat Ulan of Kazakhstan (9 points) and silver medalist Sarbartho Mani of India (8.5 points).

A Decorated Young Career

While this win is a massive milestone, standing on international podiums is nothing new for this young maestro. This bronze marks Sattwik’s sixth international medal. His growing resume of global achievements includes:

  • 2024: Bronze at the FIDE World Cup (U-8) in Batumi, Georgia.
  • 2024: Silver at the FIDE World Cadet Championship in Montesilvano, Italy.
  • Early 2026: One silver and two bronze medals at the Commonwealth Youth Chess Championship in Kalutara, Sri Lanka.

What’s Next? Heading to the Elite Finals!

FIDE has introduced an exciting, two-tiered system for the 2026 World Cadet Championship cycle across the Under-8, Under-10, and Under-12 categories. The FIDE World Cadets Cup in Batumi served as the crucial qualifying event.

Thanks to his top-three finish, Sattwik has officially punched his ticket to the elite world title finals!

The FIDE World Cadets Championship will return to Batumi from November 10 to 17, 2026.

The grand finale will feature an ultra-exclusive field of just 48 players globally—consisting of only eight players per age and gender category. The lineup is strictly limited to the top three winners of the World Cadets Cup and one continental nominee.

Huge congratulations to CM Sattwik Swain for making the country proud, and we will be rooting for him as he prepares to take on the world finals this November!

Congratulations!
