The Odisha State Junior (U19) Open & Girls Chess Championships 2023 was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Shri Abhimanyu Behera, OAS, ADM (revenue), Sundergarh. Other dignitaries were Sj. Sarat Kumar Das, President, Sundergarh District Chess Association, Sj. Suresh Kumar Patel, Hon. Secretary, SDCA; Sj. Narendra Patel, Treasurer SDCA & Sj. Alok Dutta, Jt. Secretary. Chief Guest & organising team lightened the lamp, move the piece on the top board & declared the Championships OPEN.
The total no of participants (67 OPEN-55, GIRLS-12) from 10 districts (Balangir, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Jharsuguda, Khordha, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, Puri & Sundergarh) had taken part in both the championship. Twelve, International rated players (9 – Open & 3 – Girls) participated. According to the player’s strength, 7 Rounds for OPEN & 5 Rounds Swiss system league was played with a time control of 60 minutes with 30 second increments from move no.1.
The 2nd seeded Shrihan Sabat 1603 of Ganjam stayed unbeaten in the entire championship & scored 6.5 out of 7.0 clinched the Championship and bagged ₹ 2,500/– + Championship Trophy. The top seed Aditya Ranjan Samal, 1715 of Sundergarh scored 6.0 out of 7, beat 3rd seed Ayushman Mohanty, became Runner-up & got a cash prize of ₹ 2,000/- + trophy. The third seed Ayushman Mohanty, 1516, Puri & Surraj Mohanta of Balangir became 3rd & 4th position respectively.
Finally, Odisha State Junior (Under 19) OPEN & GIRLS Chess Championship 2023 concluded with Valedictory ceremony-cum-Prize Distribution, at 05:30 P.M. on 20 August 2023 at JRD Hotel, Sundergarh.

Top seed Priyanka Routray of Sundergarh (Rourkela) remains unbeaten & scored 4.5 points out of 5.0 points clinched the Championship trophy with a cash award of Rs.2,500/- + Championship trophy. Shradha Smaranika Nanda of Cuttack became runner-up with 4.0 points and got Rs.2,000/- + Trophy.
The Top 4 finishers of both Championships will represent ODISHA in forthcoming National Junior (U19) Open & Girls Chess Championships 2023, will be held at Gujarat, from 20th to 28th September 2023.
